Are you fascinated by narwhals? I’ve always thought they were mysterious creatures. You don’t hear much about them and it turns out, we don’t know a lot. They traverse huge ranges of the Arctic waters and tend to hide when they see humans. I designed a needle felted version of this elusive whale to celebrate them and explore how to create their stunning, spiral tusk. If you’d like to make a narwhal, I have a PDF tutorial and pattern available in my Etsy shop!
My 48 page narwhal tutorial includes:
- 34 pages of instructions
- 105 accompanying full color photos
- Tool and supply lists
- Reference photos
- Care instructions
- A glossary of needle felting terms
- And a printable pattern to help you keep your narwhal in proportion as you work
You’ll learn how to create an armature, make a wool spiral tusk, apply color to the tusk, build the body, and decorate the structure with a lovely, mottled texture.
The completed narwhal sculpture is approximately 9” long x 2 ⅝” wide x 1 ⅝” tall. Your measurements will vary depending on how you decide to pose your adorable whale.
This project was created with intermediate needle felters in mind. It is also appropriate for an ambitious beginner with a grasp of basic needle felting skills or an advanced felter who wants to make something different.
Pick up this tutorial today to make your very own unicorn of the sea. After you make one, you may be inspired to create a whole pod of narwhals!
If you’d prefer to purchase a completed needle felted narwhal, check out my Etsy shop. The two that I made while creating this tutorial are available for adoption.
