Are needle felting kits or supply packs worth the money?

January 13, 2022

You’ve picked a needle felting tutorial you want to make. Next, you might want to buy a kit or supply pack for it. While they may feel expensive, kits for tutorials can often be a great value. Here’s how to decide if the one you’re looking at is right for you.

What’s your situation?

Are you new to needle felting or do you have some supplies? If you have a lot of the supplies in the kit, it might be less expensive to just purchase what you’re missing. If not, a kit might be a great way to quickly grab everything you need for a tutorial.

What does the kit include?

  • Does it include the tutorial or does the tutorial cost extra? If yes, what format is it? Video tutorials tend to cost more than PDF or printed directions.
  • What types of wool are included? Are they generous amounts?
  • Where is the wool from?
  • If the project includes supplies like wire, eyes, wax, clay, beads or a stand, are they included?
  • Does the kit include basic tools like needles and a stabbing surface?
  • Are there any other supplies you might need like toothpicks, a wood skewer, craft glue, tweezers or an awl? Do you already have them or do you need to purchase them?
  • Is shipping included or extra? How long will the kit take to arrive?

Can you view a supply list for the tutorial?

You might want to try pricing out how much it would cost to buy everything separately. You may have to buy more than you’ll use. For instance if the tutorial is an animal, it might require a tiny amount of black wool for the eyes and nose. But you’ll probably have to buy an ounce of black wool.

The benefit to buying a kit is you’ll have the supplies you need in the right amounts. And if tools are included, the right tools.
