Ask “Why?” more often – needle felting tip

Watching another artist create a beautiful needle felted animal can be inspiring, but don’t stop at copying what they do. Instead, ask yourself why they made their choices. Why did they focus on the head first? Why did they use that color instead of another? Why did they switch to a finer needle at that stage? These are the type of questions that turn a demonstration into a lesson.

I learned needle felting at home by working through a list of free and purchased tutorials. The list includes those I’ve finished and a few I still plan to do. Each one presented a specific challenge or technique I’d never tried before. Asking “Why?” as I worked through them led me down some unexpected paths. For instance, Irina Hughes’ Rise and Shine Rooster (above) offers a fascinating feather technique. While I didn’t adopt it, it led to many questions and explorations around making feathers. I’m so grateful to have taken that journey.

Asking “Why?” now builds confidence you’ll use later

Understanding the reason behind a process or technique helps you develop transferable skills you can use on every future project. The goal is not to memorize the steps for a specific animal. It’s to recognize principles that apply whether you’re felting a fox, an elephant, or a robin. This approach gives you the confidence to tackle new subjects in the future.

The next time you watch a video, follow a tutorial, or admire another artist’s work, challenge yourself to ask “Why?” as often as you ask “How?” The answers will help you become a more thoughtful, adaptable needle felter. That’s a skill that will serve you far longer than the result of a single tutorial.
